Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
Hallmark courses are pretty unique. They were created in my senior year and are meant to be a sort of intellectual substitute for AP courses. I say intellectual because I don't think they give college credit. I personally didn't do them since the topics were often niche.Another unique program is the Horizon's program. On Thursdays we would participate in the Horizons program, and it is essentially an internship or volunteer position for non-profit organizations. It is built into the class schedule so it is a good way to gain experience for college applications or resumes.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
I became a lot more independent. I was in boarding school for middle and high school so I learned to be very self-sufficient so I could deal with my issues. My biggest achievement was becoming a proctor, because it can be a time-consuming role and I was dedicated to supporting my proctees.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
Make as much use of the campus facilities as possible. You're paying for it, and you have more access to it than most day students.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
My friends and my art teacher. My friends were creative and encouraging. My art teacher always supported me and pushed me to try new things in my artwork.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
The greenhouse isn't open for long, but it is super relaxing in there and is a great place to study.
Academics:
1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
There was a good diversity in course offerings for upperclassman. I would say that sometimes the courses would be super niche in a way that might not be impressive on a college application, or useful later in your education or life.I feel like there is an academic culture that pushes people to try and over-achieve even when it's causing an excessive amount of stress.
Athletics:
1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
I think the sports selection was fairly average. If a student wanted to do a sport not offered by the school, I think they could get it cleared with the sports department to do something off-campus for their physical activity credit. Our teams weren't super competitive, but they have won a few awards. Not much to say, I wasn't super sporty even though I did well in volleyball.
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
For musical theatre, it tried to replicated some of the intensity of a real production. Sometimes we had an actual choreographer come in, and a good amount of money and effort was invested in set design and production. Even though the intensity gave students more of a glimpse into the life of a stage actress, it could sometimes be a little excessive for a bunch of untrained students. For the visual arts program, we had several working artists and they all pushed us to grow creatively. I am currently a Fine Art student, and I don't know where I would be today if I didn't get the guidance and support I got from my art teacher and my artistic friends.
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
I met some of my closest friends from clubs and organizations. Hanging out with a bunch of people into the same stuff I was really brightened my day.
Dorm Life:
1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
That you can get a single bedroom in your junior or senior year. We could apply for single bedrooms as soon as junior year. It's not guaranteed, but the option is pretty nice. All proctors are given a single room automatically. Also, there is a newer dorm that is just for seniors and juniors, and that dorm is really nice and spacious so it's something to look forward to.
Dining:
1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
I'd rate the food as a 6-8 out of 10 depending on the day. We had a hot bar, a cold bar, a desert table, and sometimes on weekends there was a noodle bar or a crepe bar. They were rare, but appreciated. Only issue for weekends is that brunch runs from maybe 10am-12:30pm, and dinner runs from about 5:30-6:30pm, so there is a fairly large gap between meals. Sometimes I was unlucky enough to miss dinner on the weekends, and since we can't use the kitchen I would just eat cup ramen.
Social and Town Life:
1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
It's pretty quiet.I will say that some of the stores were weird about POC students. There were several theft accusations made towards Black students, and when the accusations were disproven the workers showed no remorse. It's something to keep in mind.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
Fairly active. We didn't really have cliques, and that was pretty neat.
