Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
When it comes to educating students with language-based learning disabilities, Landmark's curriculum, staffing approach, and teaching methodology is second to none. Landmark provides 1:1 tutorials to all students and tailors a unique learning plan for each student. By using this methodology, Landmark's able to take students who are struggling to read in high school and get them to a level where they're able to graduate and be successful in college.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
Landmark took a student (me!) who was struggling to read and turned me into a confident, college-ready student. Getting accepted into Bentley University was a huge achievement for me after struggling so much at other schools.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
I wouldn't change anything from my time at Landmark, but I would advise new students to arrive at Landmark with an open mind and commit to the process. Landmark's process can change your life if you apply yourself. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to attend an elite school that specializes in helping students with language-based learning disabilities so take advantage of it!
4.) What did you like most about your school?
I loved Landmark's culture. The teachers genuinely care about the students' development and everyone, from administration to faculty to staff are all there to support the mission of the school. I couldn't imagine myself going to another school.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
I moved from Louisiana to Massachusetts when I was 10 years old to attend Landmark's elementary-middle school before going to Landmark's High School. It was foundational to my education and it completely reshaped my life. I can't recommend the school enough and continue to be heavily involved as an alumni.
Academics:
1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The individualized learning plan is what separates Landmark from other boarding schools. Having a touch point with a mentor daily on my learning plan was essential to my success. I felt empowered every day to be the best version of myself and I was able to push myself harder in this environment to improve on my areas of greatest need.
Athletics:
1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
I played baseball for 4 years and loved my experience. We played and practiced at a local park down the street and it provided a great opportunity to get to know students outside of my core classes. Sports are entirely optional at Landmark and we compete against other private schools in the Greater New England area.
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
I didn't participate in the music and theatre programs; however, I did take photography as an elective during my time at Landmark. I loved the opportunity to get out in nature and learn a new skill. Although I didn't pursue photography after high school it was a great learning opportunity.
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
I participated in the Student Advocates organization while I was at Landmark. The Student Advocates is a group of students who act as ambassadors for Landmark and for students with language-based learning disabilities. We traveled to various colleges (like Harvard University!) and presented to graduate students who were seeking degrees in education. You have to apply to be in this group, but if you're accepted it provides a great opportunity to develop your public speaking skills.
Dorm Life:
1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
I was a day student during my time at Landmark's high school so I can't speak much to the dorm life.
Dining:
1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
Landmark has a cooking staff on campus and the food is pretty good! They cater special events and there's always a wide variety of options.
Social and Town Life:
1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
The North Shore region of Cape Ann represents the classic New England atmosphere. Beverly Farms and Prides Crossing are quaint towns with a lot to offer. I lived in Manchester-by-the-Sea and loved going to Singing Beach after school during the summer.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
I made some of the best friends of my life at Landmark. Getting involved in extra-curricular activities and sports definitely helped me make friends.
