Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
One aspect of New Mexico Military Institute that makes it unique is the way it is run. It is run by a cadet chain of command which is set up just like the military. First, you talk to your squad leader then platoon Sgt and so on and so forth. So you do live a military life while at New Mexico Military Institute.
The second thing that is unique to New Mexico Military Institute is that you are part of a long line of cadets and alumni. You aren't in a fraternity but a Brotherhood/sisterhood. You make friends for life at New Mexico Military Institute because you have all experienced the same things.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
The best thing that has happened to me while at New Mexico Military Institute is that you become part of a Brotherhood/sisterhood. I have long left New Mexico Military Institute and I am in touch with quite a few alumni and we built up relationships over the years. My main achievement at New Mexico Military Institute was completing ROTC basic camp at Ft. Knox. It was challenging and I was able to learn a lot there. As far as how New Mexico military institute affected me as a person it made me a better person. I have more knowledge then when I first started there and the experience is a once in a lifetime experience that you will not get anywhere else.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
One thing I would have done differently while at New Mexico Military Institute was to stay around for graduation because I left before graduation.My advice to others attending New Mexico Military is learn all that you can and enjoy your time at New Mexico Military Institute because the time goes way to fast while you are there.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
Overall what I liked about New Mexico Military Institute was being part of a Brotherhood/Sisterhood because everyone watches out for each other. Unlike some other places where it is everyone for themselves.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
My final words of wisdom for incoming students is learn as much as can about New Mexico Military Institute it will enrich your experience there. I already mentioned my favorite food to order at the snack bar which was hamburgers and pizzas. Visit the entire campus of New Mexico Military Institute there are a lot of interesting things to see and do. I recommend Golf Troop. I was part of it and I can tell you Golf Troop Rocks.
Academics:
1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The academics at New Mexico Military Institute are very rigorous.You get class time study time and are able to use the learning center which has computers and other tools available to you.There is tutoring available to you if needed.The academics you learn at New Mexico Military Institute will help you make a difference later in life.New Mexico Military Institute offers High School and Junior College classes.
Athletics:
1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The athletics offered at New Mexico Military Institute are intermural and also regular team sports such as Football. For the Girls there is cheer-leading and other sports offered such as volleyball. The team sports builds team spirit and since you all live on campus it builds the corp of cadets spirit. I liked attending the basketball and football games they were always fun events. From time to time it was mandatory for cadets to be present at certain games. Some other team sports offered are rugby, cross country, soccer. swim team, pentathlon and judo and karate. There are others which I have not listed so you have plenty of options.
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
At New Mexico Military Institute they have a great music program. They have an entire troop of cadets which make up the band which is military in nature. The band/symphony/chorus make trips to places off campus such as San Diego Ca. and Santa Fe the state capital. The band would play at formations and any other event which called for them such as Silver Taps which remembers those cadets who have passed.
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
There are many extracurricular activities at New Mexico Military Institute such as the Chess club, yearbook staff. There are always volunteer activities available to cadets. Like other schools, there is something like an ASB there are class officers President, Vice President, Secretary-treasurer, and cotillon club representative.
Some clubs that are unique to Mexico Military Institute are the Goss Rifle team a precise drill team. Rifle teams-Musket and rifle. Orienteering club as well you don't find that at every college.
Dorm Life:
1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
The dorm situation is that you are put in troops and each troop lives in a certain building. Usually its 2 cadets to a room you have a locker/closet that is yours. You have a desk and computer to use. You have bunk beds in each room.You have use of a snack bar as well as being able to go off campus when allowed to visit local food establishments.The thing I liked best about the dorm life is that you build Troop spirit.
Dining:
1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
The dining arrangements at New Mexico Military Institute is that you eat in a dining hall. You get 3 meals a day and there are plenty of choices of good food. You sit together with your squad/platoon/Troop. In the off hours, you can visit the snack bar and cadet store. The snack bar has a variety of things you can order. My favorites were the hamburgers and pizza. For others, you can order things like nachos and fries.
Social and Town Life:
1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
The Town surrounding New Mexico Military Institute is Roswell. It is a neat little town with an interesting history. You can visit the Alien museum since Roswell is known for its UFO sightings. There is a mall in town and plenty of good places to eat. The thing I liked about Roswell is that I had relatives that lived there so when I got a furlough to leave New Mexico Military Institute I could go and visit them. People are friendly in Roswell.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
There are plenty of times you can socialize while at New Mexico Military Institute such as attending games, dances and certain dinners. The General has a picnic for the cadets which is pretty fun. Also if you participate in clubs you can socialize with others whom have the same interest as you. You also get to socialize within your own Troop and of course your roommate. What I liked most about the socializing is that you meet people from all walks of life. There are cadets from other countries which attend New Mexico Military Institute.
